Journal 17: BARAKA

When I saw the first parts of the video, in which the beautiful and natural scenes, and grave religious activities were coming to my eyes, I had unprecedented relaxing and sacred feelings about what the real nature is. I remembered my childhood dream again which is living in an ideal world. For me, I learned the ideal world in my primary school book, where there is no pollution, no fight, no pressure...the only thing is enjoyment, peace, and quiet. We can image how comfortable life will be in such natural environment.

There are indeed have some ideal world and live the rustic people in the somewhere in earth which perhaps we already know or don not know. From the video we can see that those religious people have their own firm belife and the sacred culture. Sometimes I think that there might be another pure world in their heart forever. When they bless, I can tell from their sincere face, they bless their homeland, their family, and maybe the peace of the world.

However, nowadays, with the development of the tourist industry and the pursuit of profit, lots of natural environment are destoried by our human beings. Although we cannot prevent the nature scene from exploiting from our government, whenever you go to travel, except your endless enjoyment, please do not throw away rubbish freely.

Journal 16: Confucius Quote

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."

A old story was filled with my mind when I saw this quote, which is about a run match between two animals: a rabbit, and a tortoise . After the match began, the rabbit fell behind the rabbit, but the tortoise insisted and did not stop for a while. Ironically, because the long time stop of rabbit, tortoise won the mathch. Whenever I saw something like this, I feel that I should do everything with my completely perseverance.

Last September when I arrived at the U.S., everything was strange to me, and I chould not adapted to the new environment for a long time. Talk to native people was the most hardest work for me, I wanted to give up several times. However, I persuaded myself to overcome the difficulties. No matter how improvement I make every day as long as I do not stop to try, then I will achieve my goal.

Every one is facing various of challenges in our daily life. When you want to abandon your dream, just consider this sentence and encourage yourself!

Journal 15: Analyzing an Argument

Daniel, Griswold (April 15, 2010). China- it's money. Los Angeles Times. Retrieved April 16, 2010, from http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-griswold15-2010apr15,0,2954950.story
In this article, Daniel opposes the argument by the U.S. Treasury Department that the U.S. Treasury Department should delay its semiannual in order to force China to appreciate its currency (par. 1). Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner's argument that he would delay the scheduled April 15 release is a claim of policy which appeals to reason : give more time to negotiate with top Chinese officials. However, Daniel thinks this policy is nonsense because China is the hottese major export market for U.S. companies (par. 5). Daniel gives many import and export statistics evidence (par. 6- 14) to demonstrate that the most beneficial way for America is to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries, not to pick a needless fight.

Journal 14: Letter to My parents

Dear Mom and Dad,
I hope your today is going well!

As we talked about my lone trip to Europe, it is ture that take a trip by myself is dangerous. Indeed, there are many unexpected difficulties I will face. However, we must also consider what a unique experience it is to me! At first, it is a good chance for me to learn how to live by myself in the unknown environment. I will graduate next year, and must become independent and have ability to deal with everything by myself. Second, the society security system in Europe is advanced and the people are nice, so the excess worry is unnecessary. The important point is that I learned how to protect myself from Dad,so i will take care myself, don't worry! Third, take a long trip by myself is my dream, and I want to have some colorful memories before i graduate. No matter what I want to do, you always back me up. Therefore, I need your strong support as usual. I will carefully take care of myself!

I really hope to get your permission, and start to prepare my exciting tirp. I love you, thanks!

Yours,
Dan

Journal 13: Summarize/Paraphrase Practice

As Christopher Hintonm(2010) stated in this article that the of combination of a United, US Airways deal would creat less profit than a merger of United-Continental deal. Hintomn stated that some AirlineForecasts predicted that a United-Continental combo would create an additional $5.8 billion in market value, a United-US Airways combo would create just $2.5 billion to $3 billion in additional value.(Par.3). However, some analylists pointed that the United-Continental merger process will be more complicated than the United-US because the later has the similar operational structure (Par.5). In sum, as the cooperation between United and Continental Airlines is continuously increasing, the combo of this two companies will become ture.

Christopher Hinton. (2010, April 9). A United, US Airways deal lacks luster, some analysts say United-Continental deal could create more value, but may also be too complex. ADVICE

We can find various ways to get advice from outside sources such as from parents, friends, internet, and so on. It is important to seek suggestions when you want to make a big decision because different people have distinct opinion on the coming thing, and generally our closed parents and friends try their best to give us the most beneficial advice to help us.

The best advice gave to me should be continuing my education in the United State from my parents. When I graduated from the university in my home contry, I wanted to extend my education in China. However, my father recommended that I should experience some new life challenges and accumulate the wide knowledges from the United State. As following my parents' suggestion, I started my new life in California and already got used to this way of life. Without doubt, I'd like the life here and hope I can start to general study early.

In addition, when consider what advice I gave to others, I have no idea about that because I prefer to consider the advice as discussion. The first interesting thing came in my mind is that I introduce one of my male friends to one of my female friends, and now they became an happy couple. Is it the successful advice?

American Food and Chinese Food

Before I came to the U.S., I already knew something about the American food because we can see KFC, McDonald's everywhere. Since every kind of food has the similar features, the differences between american food and chinese food are so obvious that can not be ignored.

The top three differences are as followings: the way we cook, the main food, and the sauce. In china we cook the vegetables, but americans always eat the vegetables directly as vegetables salad. In addition, the main foods for us are rice and noodles, with some dishes for every meal. The main foods for americans are hamburgers, salad and pizza. However, for me, i consider these kinds of food as snacks. Furthermore, in amercia we can buy all kinds of sauce already down when we cook our daily food. Even though we have a lot of sauce also, we lacks the big bottle of ketchup, barbecue sauce, and so on.

When i was in china, i liked the burger in KFC and McDonald's, but after i came here i found the burger is different from that of in china. I am nor sure that it is the food reason i got many weights, anyway, i already took some actions such as lowering intake dose of the fast food, eating little fried food and candies. Hope i can be recognized when i come back!

Optimistic Attitude

There are a lots of famous quotes encourage people to be optimistic whenever we have bad emotions such as sad, disappointed, frustrated, and so on. In my view, most of people want to keep an optimistic attitude because we can caught the opportunity if have an optimistic attitude. As the quote said "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." - Winston Churchill", it is obvious that optimistic attitude is beneficial for us.

I started to write down the beautiful sentences from all kinds of readings which can optimistically encourage me when I was in middle school. At that time, when the bad things made me unconfident, I liked to read those sentences agian and agian. However, I stopped to repeat this kind of behavior after I graduated from the univertity. Still, I think that I aready thoroughly understood and took in the positive side of everything, even the worst thing happen.

I consider myself as an optimist because I believe that after rain comes the sunshine. Our life is short, we should grasp every possible opportunity not see the impossible difficulty in every opportunity. Also, there is another sentence I love most which is "I believe I can fly, I can touch the sky"

My Friend and Me

When people talk about the friends, most of them believe that only if a group of people have major features in common such as the similar perspectives, hobbies, and valuable view, they can become the friends with others. Nevertheless, it is the distinct differences between my best friend Yan and I that make us the best friends. The primary diffenrences between us is in the three areas: communciation ways, hobbies, food.

Communciaton ways perhaps the first difference between us. Yan is adep at communciating with others. Whatever people she meets, she knows or does not know, she can keep talking with them, and make the atmosphere warmly. In contrast, I only have a lots to talk with people who I know, but for the people I first meet, I always in a passive talking ways and even feel shame. Therefore, I always want she to company with me to go all kinds of parties.

A second difference is some hobbies. She really like dancing, whenever she heard music, she can immediately dance without mind people's view. In addition, she likes reading poem, even she always creats her own style poem. Unlike her, I like lisening music, singing songs, and surfering in internet. Therefore, when we have spare time, I listened music while she was dancing. Also I am the first reader of her poem and invite her to watch moives in internet.

Finally, perhaps the most striking difference between us is food. She does not eat pork, beef, checken, and many other meat. However, I eat what she does not like. What strange is that we all like fish so much, and we always go to restaurant together and have much fun in eating!

In conclusion, altough we hava a lots personalities the same as each other, we still have some differences such as communication, hobbies, and food. However, our solid relationship may due to both the similiarities and differences. As the Chinese New Year is coming, I miss her and others so much!!!

If I Can Talk to the Animals

I believe that animals have their own language and that a little few people even can understand the language of animals. People always try to talk with animals, for example, people give the cute name to their pets, ask them to eat, to parking, and walk their pets. Another obvious example is the performing animal, no matter what language we used to communicate with them, gesture language or oral language, we do realize that we can talk to animals.

I like small animals such as cats, poppes, birds, and so on. However, I am very scared of the big animals like big dogs. If I can talk to the animals, I would like to ask them a series of questions as following: Do you like to be along with humans beings? What do you always talk with your friends? What does your world like, like humans' or not?

In addition, because I am scared of big animals, if I can talk to the animals, I would like to let them know that I am a kind-hearted people and will never hurt them. If they could understand me, I think we could be the friends and I will not afraid of them any more.

My Favorite Song

One of my hobby is listen to music if i have spare time whenever i feel sad or happy. I love chinese songs as the same as english songs, which i must listen now for practicing my listening skills in the United State. My favorite english song must be "My Heart Will Go On", which is the theme song of the famous classical movie Titanic.

The first time i heard this song is when i was in my first year of high school. At that time, i just thought it was beautiful and a little bit easy for me to following the meaning. It was not become the most important song to me until one of my classmate sang it in our celebration of first semester. Her performance was so wonderful that we were all attracted by not only her voice but also the song. After her finished, all the students followed her involuntarily. That night, we repeated the song for many times. Finally this song became the main song of our class.

Whenever I heard this song, it reminds me of my happy life in high school and many of my classmates at that time. Even though we are become adults now, we always sing this song when we meet again. How wonderful this song is!

Weather

The weather in South California is different from that in my hometown because here there are only summer and fall season, but in my hometown the weather is normal which comprise spring, summer, fall, and winter. For me, I like the pleasant weather, fall and spring, in which seasons the weather is neither cold nor hot.

Currently, the season in my hometow is winter, and sometimes there is heavy snow. I did not see any snow here, so I am a little bit miss the snow in my country. Although the weather in winter is cold, our heater system is good that we have heater everywhere, our home, school, restaurant, shopping mall...However, I prefer the spring here because i do not need to wear the big warm clothing even when I go out.

The reason I like fall is that sometimes i look farword to the continuous fall rain. In that kind of weather, i like to sleep all day because the sky is drak, the outside is a little cold. I can close door, open the heater, turn off my lights, sleep in the bed, and enjoy the movie. So wonderful time for me to relax myself.

Old Fear

I believe most of the people do not want to being alone, me either, especially when we departure from our family to a new unknow environment. Even I can consider the fear of being alone as a very challenge, because for me I like the warm and friendly atmosphere when I get together with my family and friends. I felt rather lonely in this strange town at first I came to California, there is nothing familiar to me, totally different language, distinct people, very western food, inconveinent transportation, and so forth. However, I am getting used to being alone with time because I already adapted to the enviroment and I found my ways to overcome this pesky fear.

The most substantial thing for me is that I tried to make new friends who have something in common with me. In our spare time, we talk some fuuny thing or go out side to familiar with the surroundings, inhale fresh air. In addition, I tried to keep a positive attitude toward the fear of being alone. Whenever I live alone, I think it is a perfect time for me to do my own things such as watching movie, listening music, cleaning room and so on. One of my friend told me you must prepare to tolerate the terrible alone time and overcome it as soon as possible. Now six months passed away, and I already familiar with this environment. Being alone is nothing to me now, I can be alone anytime and if I don't like it, I will hang out with my friend.

New Year's resolution

When i was in University in China, i set kinds of different resolutions every semester, from the study-related resolution like got high score, of course, to life-related resolution like lost weight, and I carried them out well. However, but it seems that I have not had a good luck since i came to the U.S., because of my failure in achieving my goals of last semester such as passing toefl and geting admission from gradute school. Perhaps because I was so unsuitable for the new envrionment, so i took it easy of the whole thing. This semester may be a busy semester for me because I have a lot of goals i want to realize.

The most important thing to me is that pass the toefl. I really need this minimum score for applying for my master's degreee, and I am planning to do my best to get access to the admission for the fall 2010. In order to achieve it, the great effort is needed to put in.

In addition, i chose two openning university classes this semester, and my basic target for these two classes is that i can get at least "B" at the end of this semester, which I can use for offseting my prequisites of master class.

Last but not least, I want to keep fit. I will eat healthy food, do regular exercise, have enough sleep, and make new friends to keep the balance between my study and entertainment.

After noticing every one have many big resolutions fot the new year, hoping we all have good luck!

Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Sherry, and I came from China. I have a lot of hobbied, such as listening music, wacthing movie, hanging out with my friends, shopping, and do a little sports. I came here for my master's degree in CSUF, but firstly I must pass my TOEFL which is hard for me to get at least 570. Perhaps because last semester I didn't put all my effort to prepare the tough toefl, i will prepare it again this semester, and i decide to try my best this time to achieve my goals.

Now i want to take about one of our classmate, whose name is Sireesha. The funny thing is she taught me several time to pronunce her name, and now i can do it well...She came form Indian
and has a litter brother and her parents in her family.Wehave almost the same hobbies, may be all the girls have some similar hobbies. Sireesha will study computer science as her master's degree in CSUF, so probably we will ran into each other in campus in the future. The interesting aspect I knew from her was that in her country they celebrate some essential God's day instead of Christmas and New Year.

Nice to know all of you in our class, and be happy to spent the whole semester with you guys. I wish every one can achieve your own objective...bless!
